DO I HAVE DRY EYE DISEASE (DED)?

DRY EYES – CAUSES, SYMPTOMS AND TRATMENT

Over 340 Million people globally suffer from DRY EYE Disease (DED). This is a significant medical health problem.

Dry eye is a common condition and occurs when natural tears cannot properly lubricate the eyes. Natural tears are critical to the overall health of the eyes. Tears protect, nourish, and maintain your eyes’ health and comfort as well as provide you with clear vision. With each blink, a protective layer of tears is spread over the front of the eyes but, when there is an imbalance of tears quality or insufficient volume, dry eyes are often the result. This is caused by either a reduction in tear creation or an increase in tear evaporation. If not treated, dry eye can cause lasting damage to the corneal surface and declining vision.

What causes dry eye?

Several factors can cause dry eye. These include:

  • Environment: Hot, dry houses during the winter, dry air-conditioned homes in the summer, windy or smoky environments, or arid climates can cause dry eyes.
  • Medication: Some medications have a side effect that causes dry eyes. These include antihistamines, antidepressants, decongestants, diuretics, and hormone replacement therapies.
  • Age: As we age, our eyes change. Some patients may experience reduced tear production, and, subsequently, dry eyes.
  • Gender: Women tend to be more susceptible to dry eyes, especially those who are pregnant or over the age of 40.
  • Skin and eyelid disorders: Inflammatory skin disorders like rosacea, infections, and inflammatory eyelid disorders can all affect the tear film’s lipid layer, leading to dry eyes.
  • Systemic disorders and other diseases: Conditions like Sjögren’s syndrome, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, diabetes, thyroid conditions, or a Vitamin A deficiency can cause dry eyes.
  • Those who wear contact lenses, spend a lot of time working with digital screens, or have had laser eye surgery may also develop dry eyes.

Dry Eye Symptoms

Dry eyes can cause bothersome symptoms, like burning or stinging, grittiness, redness or the constant feeling that something is in the eye. Aside from being irritating and painful, dry eyes can additionally cause infections and other serious eye concerns if left untreated.

Dry eye can result in symptoms including:

  • A stinging, burning, or scratching sensation in the eyes
  • Stringy discharge in or around the eyes
  • Watery Eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurred vision, inconsistent vision
  • Eye redness and discomfort
  • Discomfort wearing contact lenses
  • Difficulty with nighttime driving
  • Fatigued, sore, or heavy eyes

Dry Eye Diagnosis

Dry eye disease can be diagnosed by an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist. In some cases by a General Practitioner that will refer to an eye Doctor. Regular Eye examinations are recommended for early diagnosis and disease management, treatment or prevention. An eye specialist can use different diagnostic methods to observe the severity of the condition and its progression, and order specialized tests or blood work for systemic disorders that dry eye is a symptom of.

Dry Eye Treatment

Treatment for dry eye depends on the severity of the disease. Mild cases require no more than use of artificial tear solutions and hot compresses, eyelid massage or eye ointments.

In more serious cases, sustained-release eye lubricants, an insert placed in the eye area slowly dissolves and thickens the tear film may be used or Prescription eye drops. Scleral lenses, which are large surface contact lenses that trap moisture onto the eye’s surface may be an option.

Other Dry Eye Treatment require In Office Procedures, These need to be discussed and assessed with the eye care specialist

Please contact us to find out more information or book an Appointment with eyecare specialist for an assessment.

Time to see the Doctor

Time to see the Doctor

It is recommended that adults should get a routine eye exam every 1-2 years. Now, that doesn’t mean that you are only allowed to have an eye exam once a year. If you ever feel that something may be wrong with your eyes, then please get them checked out as soon as possible.

There are many different reasons to come in for an eye exam, but here are some of the most common reasons for visiting the optometrist. For example, if your eyes are dry, and feeling uncomfortable, then you should definitely book an exam, because having dry eyes can lead to vision problems and overall health of your eye.

Another reason may be you feel a strain on your eyes from looking at a digital screen too often. Screens seem to be in almost everybody’s lives now. Whether it be your phones, TV’s, computers, even the dashboards in today’s cars seem to be heading towards becoming fully digital. But constantly looking at these screens seem to be impacting the way we blink. As it turns out, the longer we stare at our screens, the slower we blink, which leads to our eyes not lubricating properly. And when our eyes are not properly lubricated, it can lead to our eyes experiencing dry eye symptoms.

Sun exposure, as well as allergies, are two other common reasons for eye exams. Making sure you are protecting not just your skin, but also your eyes from UV rays is extremely important. By wearing UV protection sunglasses will help reduce the risk of sun damage to your eyes. If you feel your eyes are being affected by your allergies, the eye doctor will be able to help make sure you aren’t accidentally causing damage to your eyes, and will be able to prescribe medicine that can help manage the symptoms.

Finally one of the most common reasons to visit your eye doctor is vision correction. If you have never had an eye exam done before, and you notice that you are having trouble focusing on something, be it near or far, you should visit the optometrist. He or she will be able to give you a glasses prescription that will allow you to see clearly. Even if you have already gotten a prescription before, you should still visit the eye doctor every 1-2 years to make sure that the prescription has not changed, and if it has, then you should get the new prescription filled, to make sure you are getting the best vision you possibly can.

Although it may not seem very important, getting your eyes checked out regularly is. Whether the reason for your visit be dryness, eye strain, sun exposure, allergies, vision correction, or even just for your annual check up, coming in to visit the eye doctor to make sure that your eyes are healthy and you are able to see properly should always be a priority. Orthokeratology: What is it?, and how it all works?

Orthokeratology, is an alternative treatment to LASIK surgery and standard myopia control treatments. Using sophisticated diagnostic equipment to map the surface of the cornea to manufacture gas permeable contact lenses that temporarily reshape the cornea to reduce refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. This method can be used as an alternative to eyeglasses, or for those who prefer not to wear contact lenses during the day.

The treatment is offered in two options;

Option #1 – Vision Correction for adults

Option #2 – Myopia Control for Kids and young adults.

My Ortho-K Experience

No more glasses with Ortho-K Treatment in Scarborough

by Rey Juman

I have a prescription for distance and I’m unable to see clearly more than 5 feet in front of me without needing glasses. Unhappy with always needing to wear glasses, I spoke with my optician and he recommended a new treatment option. I know many people pursue LASIK eye surgery to remove their prescription, but I was worried of the potential irreversible damage that could occur after doing research online, hearing stories from my friends, and on the news. That’s when I first learned about Ortho-Keratology, a new treatment that would correct my prescription without having to have any surgery and with minimal risk on my eyes by using overnight contact lenses to reshape my eye. According to the optician, not only will I see without glasses, but my original prescription will be preserved and the myopia (nearsightedness) will no longer progress over time. That means that if I ever decide to stop wearing these lenses, within a few days, I will be right back in the same glasses that I was wearing before starting this treatment. It was also available with 12 month NO INTEREST financing… Sounds good to me!

I decided to start the treatment. The first step involves being scanned by my optician using a machine called a Corneal Topographer which took a 3D map of my eye. From this, he is able to determine if I am eligible for the Ortho-K treatment and if so, how to make the overnight lenses to properly correct my prescription.

After I was determined to be eligible, I provided my optician with my prescription and 5 days later I was presented with my brand-new Ortho-K lenses!

My optician then sat down with me and explained cleaning procedures, how to put them on and off, and how to maintain the lenses. The lenses can be used for 1 year, so it is very important to keep them clean to avoid eye infections. He told me to wear them that night, and to come in the morning for a follow up appointment.

The first night, I cleaned my lenses and put them on right before bed. They were a little tricky to get on and it took me a few attempts, but I was able to put both on without any assistance. In my eye, they felt slightly uncomfortable, but once I closed my eyes, I could hardly feel them and I quickly fell asleep.

In the morning, I followed my optician’s instructions on proper removal and I was surprised to find I was seeing much better than before. I went back the optical store for my next day follow up appointment and I was scanned using the Corneal Topographer once again to ensure that the lenses were working correctly and to see if any adjustments needed to be made. Once I received the all clear, I was told to wear them every night for the next 10 days and then I would need to come in for another follow-up appointment then.

[Update Apr 15 2019]:

After 3 days, I am seeing 20/20! The lenses are now very easy to put on and I have no difficulty falling asleep. I will continue to wear them until the 10 day period is up and see my results.

[Update Apr 26 2019]:

It’s been 2 weeks and I love my lenses. I now only have to wear them once or twice a week whenever I feel like the prescription is starting to return. It was a very hassle free experience and I would recommend it to anyone who qualifies.

Talk to your optician and find out if you are a good candidate for Ortho-K.

As for me, I’m glasses free!

Protecting your eyes from HEV blue light

If you’re having a hard time falling asleep at night, consider getting yourself a pair of glasses equipped with a blue light blocking coating. In the digital age, most of us are using our devices from morning to night and with that comes the effects of high energy visible (or HEV) light such as blue light which is emitted from digital screens. HEV light is shown to cause reduced melatonin levels (hormone involved in telling your body it’s time to sleep) and more frequent awakenings throughout the night. This reduces your quality of sleep which leads to drowsy mornings and limited concentration throughout the day.

Getting a pair of glasses with a blue light filter will greatly reduce your exposure to HEV light and limit its effect on your eyes and brain. You will have a higher quality of sleep so that you feel ready to tackle the day every morning!

Next time you are in for an eye exam or your next eyeglass purchase, ask us about our blue light blocking coatings; which can be applied to almost any lens you may currently be using, and we’ll be happy to help you.

Need help reading the “small print”?

<img src=”https://readingglasses.london/images/index/sun_readers_reading_glasses_2.jpg” alt=”Image result for reading glasses” />

Time for reading glasses???

Presbyopia is the gradual loss of your eye’s ability to focus on nearby objects. The condition begins to manifest around the age of 40 and continues to develop until about 65. As you get older, you may notice objects that are close by are blurry and out of focus and that you have a tendency to hold reading material out at arm’s length to better discern the text.

This condition is caused by the loss of flexiblity in the lens that focuses light onto the retina. Normally, this<span> </span><span class=”text_exposed_show”>lens is very flexible and changes its shape to focus light depending on if you are looking into the distance, or at something nearby. Naturally, as we age, this lens hardens and becomes less flexible. As the lens loses flexiblility, it can no longer effectively change shape to properly focus light and nearby images begin to appear out of focus.</span>

If you are beginning to experience symptons such as blurry vision at reading distance or eyestrain after prolonged close work, call or stop by @Metroptical and schedule an eye examination. If you are affected by presbyopia, you can benefit from a pair of reading or progressive glasses that will be able compensate for the reduced lens flexibility and get you back to operating normally.
